Tips to Stop Homework Procrastination

Most students have a ton of commitments to take care of on a daily basis, so when it comes time to do homework, they may not want to do it at all. Instead of allowing your child to focus their time on other extracurricular activities, ensure they get this very important task done right away by using these tips.

Create a Homework Routine

Getting homework done right after school is a great way to get it out of the way so that your child can use their evening for other activities they like. To ensure this is one of the first things that gets done after school, create a homework routine that is easy to follow. Prepare a snack for your child, have some quick outdoor time to get out pent up energy, and then sit down to do homework in a quiet and productive space. Your child may try to resist this new routine at first, but after a while, they'll get used to it and do it without thinking. They may even like the fact that they finish their homework early and have more free time in the evenings to relax.

Set Small Goals

If your child is struggling to find the motivation to get their homework done, creating small goals can help them get to the finish line. Before your child dives into their daily homework, have them come up with some goals they'd like to meet during this time. Have them be specific so that the goals are concrete and achievable. For example, instead of saying they want to complete some reading for their literature class, they should be specific and decide how many pages or chapters they want to complete that day. Having this specific goal to work towards will keep them motivated while helping them feel like they've accomplished something useful.

Remove Distractions

It's easy for students to get distracted, whether it be because of their electronics, noise, or even hunger. If your child often spends too much time trying to complete their homework, they may spend most of this time being distracted. To help your child be more productive and get their homework done right away, work on identifying their biggest distractors and remove these from their study space. Your child will also have to be responsible and take some of the initiative, so let them know you're proud of their efforts and improvement.
