Math Help in Columbus, OH

Why is science education important? At The Tutoring Center in Columbus, OH, we know that It develops critical thinking and cognitive skills. Children don't have to learn how to wonder, discover, and explore; they do it naturally through play. But it is our jobs as parents and tutors to guide them into engaging both physically and mentally in investigating and manipulating the elements in their environment. Here is a couple of science experiments that you can do with your child.

The Science of Bubbles

Because of the way the soap molecules attract and repel each other and the water, the soap creates a bond that gives the water additional strength, which allows the bubbles to last much longer. Bubbles will always be round when they are floating because air pressure pushes equally on the entire surface of the bubble forming a sphere. For the most durable and longest-lasting bubbles, you will need:
  • 12 parts distilled water
  • 1 part concentrated liquid dish soap.
  • ½  part of a lubricant such as SurgiLube or KY Jelly
Pour all three ingredients into a container with a tight fitting lid. Shake the ingredients until mixed well. Allow the container of bubble solution to sit overnight. Experiment with household utensils or anything that would make a good bubble wand. Put the solution on a flat surface and use a straw to blow a dome bubble.

Dancing Cornstarch Ball

Put two cups of cornstarch in a bowl. Add small amounts of water until the cornstarch is the consistency of thick pancake batter. You will notice that the cornstarch has a strange  liquid/solid element to it. Take the cover off of a box speaker hooked up to a stereo. Lay the speaker face up on the floor or table. Stretch plastic wrap over the speaker on all sides, leave just enough slack to keep the cornstarch from sliding off. Pour the cornstarch in the middle of the plastic wrap, then turn on the stereo. Play something with a heavy beat. Watch the cornstarch ball dance!

You don’t need to have a degree in chemistry to help your children become better science thinkers. But you can give your child an extra edge in school by contacting The Tutoring Center in Columbus, Ohio for supplemental education. Call (614) 459-0091 for a free consultation.
