How to Help Your Child Overcome Academic Burnout

Academic burnout is a condition that can affect students in higher grade levels with a great number of responsibilities. This state of exhaustion can be overcome with some simple steps.

Identify the Signs of Burnout

Burnout doesn't happen overnight; it develops over a period of time that is full of stress and being overworked. Your child may start to lose sleep, skip meals, and stop participating in activities they once enjoyed. Some signs of academic burnout can include constant fatigue, inability to focus, loss of interest in academic activities, and even physical illness brought on by stress and lack of healthy habits. If you notice your child is overwhelmed by their workload, step in and offer help.

Lighten Their Load

One way to help your child is by offering them an outlet. Sit down and listen when they want to share what is stressing them out. If your child simply has too much on their plate, help them decide on a few activities they can let go of for now. Help them make a list of all their responsibilities and help them prioritize each item on the list. This will make it easier for them to decide what they can let go of in order to overcome their current exhaustion.

Make Time to Relax

Once your child has let go of a few activities, they should have a bit of free time to enjoy. Encourage them to use this free time to participate in fun activities that don't add more stress to their life. For example, you can encourage them to attend school functions, like dances and sports games where they can relax and socialize. You can also encourage your child to take advantage of their free time by making time for breaks in between studying. Taking breaks in between study sessions can actually help them return to their work more concentrated and motivated, which will show in their grades.

Ask for Help

It may be hard to do for some, but it's important that your child learns to ask for help when they need it. If your child could use extra help keeping up in class or developing better time management skills, a tutoring center can help make it easier. Look for the right tutoring center that can help your child maintain their confidence and motivation through the school year.
