Keep a Science Brain Active at Home

Science projects can be a great task - if you complete them. If you find that your child is science minded however you struggle to keep their attention, The Tutoring Center in Columbus has a few ideas for some projects to keep their brain active and focused.

The Solar System

Head to the local craft store and pick up some basic styrofoam balls of different sizes to represent planets in the solar system.  Now the fun starts - start to paint! While many diagrams may show you the colors of the planets, let your child be a little creative and depict how they think the planets would look. Start with the Sun in the middle, and work your way out, laying the balls on the grass in your backyard to show the relative distance.

Geology

If your child is a little older or more into technology, the internet has a great amount of seismic data that can provide a plethora of information and reports that can be used to track and learn about earthquakes across the world. Once your child has a general understanding they can use this information to create their own diagrams and reports.

Make a Volcano

Making a volcano from paper mache is not only easy, but messily fun to do! Use some wire or a mesh base to build up the shape of a volcano and then paper mache away! Once dried, you and your children can paint the volcano anyway you choose. If your child has other toys, perhaps dinosaurs, that could  be involved, create a small play-set or diorama for the volcano to be 'active' in.  Now you have your setting, place a small container at the top and add two tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent and five drops or red and yellow food coloring. Once you're ready, drip ip an ounce of vinegar to create the fake eruption.
