Tips for Students Preparing for Standardized Tests

Standardized tests are not an uncommon part of a student's life. In fact, these types of exams are used to assess many things, including a student's growth, a school's standing, and are even part of entrance requirements for most universities. If your child has a standardized test coming up, help them prepare with these tips.

How to Prepare for a Test

Standardized tests aren't usually a surprise, meaning your child should be informed about the upcoming exam ahead of time. As soon as they know about the exam they should develop some type of study plan. Studying should be done daily in order to ensure your child is able to learn the material well without stressing. It's very important that your child knows what will be covered on the exam so that they don't waste time studying the wrong lessons. Encourage them to ask their teacher for a study guide or some type of information regarding the topics being tested.

Learn Test Taking Strategies

There are plenty of strategies your child can learn to make taking a standardized test less stressful. To start, teach your child to read the directions fully before getting started. They should also read the question and answer choices completely before selecting an answer. Have them identify keywords in the question that will lead them to the correct answer. Another important aspect to consider is time and time management. Encourage your child to answer the easier questions first in order to avoid wasting too much time on the more difficult questions. They can then go back and spend their time figuring out the more difficult questions. If they don't get penalized for wrong answers, they should answer every question even if they're not sure they know the answer.

Understand the Results

Once the test is over, all you can do is wait for the results. Be sure you and your student know how to read the results and understand what they mean. Pay attention to your child's strengths and weaknesses and develop some plans to help them improve in their weaker areas. If your child receives results lower than what you know they're capable of, talk to their teacher and look for additional resources.
