How to Help Your Child Make It Through Finals
Any student can tell you that finals week is one of the most stressful and trying times of the school year. Even so, there are plenty of things you can do to help your child be prepared for exams while keeping stress to a minimum.
Have Your Child Be the Teacher
One of the best ways for a child to assess how well they know something is by having them explain it. Have your child take on the role of the teacher as you play the student. As your child teaches you the lessons they're studying, it will become more evident what areas they have mastered and what areas could use a bit more studying. Feel free to ask questions so that they're better prepared for exams.
Make a Finals Game Plan
If your child has quite a bit of studying to do, help them develop a game plan for how they're going to get it all done. Start by figuring out together what exams your child needs to study for. Next, gather their study materials. This may include a study guide, books, notes, old exams, and old homework assignments. Write down the exam dates on a calendar so that your child has an easier time prioritizing what to study for first. Remind them to make more time to study for classes they struggle with and not focus too much time on those that they feel comfortable with.
Encourage Self Care
As your child jumps into their studying, it may be easy for them to forget to take care of themselves. If they're not sleeping enough, it will be harder for their brain to retain information, so encourage them to get plenty of sleep each night. Not eating healthy or at all will make it harder for them to concentrate, leading to ineffective study sessions. Remind them that cramming isn't effective and can even lead to added stress and anxiety. Do your best to provide your child with healthy snacks and water as they study.
